Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

Plunket Nurses go far beyond weighing babies.  Raising tamariki for those who have great support, are well resourced, and excited to welcome a new addition, while rewarding, is nevertheless hugely demanding.

You will work with whānau in the Whakatāne area and manage the caseload from when they are discharged from their midwife (or other LMC) through to their final check which takes place around 3 years old. Imagine, literally watching your community grow before your eyes! Being able to make decisions and work on your own is something that many of our nurses highlight as a bonus of working with us, with a focus on supporting people in the community in their own homes you'll have the freedom to make decisions independently all the while with strong team support.

At Whānau Āwhina Plunket, we walk alongside caregivers across Aotearoa from all backgrounds, including those who are experiencing difficult periods or other issues which make their load more complex. Our scope of practice and duty of care means that the clinical aspects in our top to toe physical assessments co-exist with the need to understand, explore and delve into the wider environment pēpi lives in. This might involve exposure to family harm, substance addiction and deprivation. The change and impact you make might not be easy or fast but is certainly fulfilling when we are able to make a difference.

He kōrero mōu | About you

We are always interested to improve our service, so continuous improvement opportunities will excite you and you will be comfortable working with some level of ambiguity. Gaining and maintaining trust with our whānau is perhaps the most important aspect of this role. Having the people skills to form connections with parents and caregivers is key to this position, which helps you to understand and helps tackle what is front of mind in that home as they raise their little people.

You will come to us with exceptional clinical skills, which will be tested daily as you conduct assessments from 4 weeks through to 3 years. Where we connect with clients with multiple needs, there may be a number of referrals to be written and sent, so a level of computer literacy is required for the role. Having an understanding and connection to the Whakatāne area will be advantageous.
