You do not need to be a Registered Nurse to apply role, however Registered Nurses with an IBCLC qualification are welcome to apply. You will need to work a minimum 0.6–1.0 FTE; this may be negotiable for the right candidates.

This role delivers specialised breastfeeding support to breastfeeding māmā across Aotearoa. We have contact centres in Wellington and Auckland, but you can be based anywhere in New Zealand. Fast-fibre connection and a private space are required to ensure you can easily connect with whānau and maintain confidentiality.

Te Whiwhinga mahi | The opportunity

As a Lactation Consultant, you will provide virtual consultations to support breastfeeding mothers and whānau, responding to referrals received internally from PlunketLine Nurses and Plunket kaimahi from the front line, allied health professionals and self-referrals, you will assess breastfeeding challenges, offer practical guidance, and in partnership, develop individualised plans that support each māmā’s breastfeeding goals. 

You'll have a passion for staying current with developments in lactation and breastfeeding support, and sharing your knowledge with colleagues to help ensure the guidance provided to whānau reflects current best practice.

Through the use of practical resources, teaching aids, and demonstrations, you'll support whānau to understand their options and develop the confidence and skills needed for a successful breastfeeding journey.

As part of a wider network of health professionals, you'll build strong working relationships and coordinate referrals where additional support is needed, helping whānau achieve the best possible outcomes.

You will be confident providing compassionate, culturally responsive and evidence-based lactation support. You will have strong assessment skills, excellent communication, and the ability to build trusted relationships with whānau by video conference.

To be successful in this role, you will bring: 

• A current International Board Certified Lactation Consultant  (IBCLC) qualification. 

• At least two years’ experience practising as a lactation consultant. 

• Demonstrated knowledge of breastfeeding techniques, products and equipment. 

• Experience partnering with māmā to understand and support their breastfeeding goals. 

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to clearly document agreed plans of care. 

• Empathy, active listening, resilience and a calm, solution-focused approach. 

• A commitment to equity, inclusion, and culturally safe practice, ensuring all whānau feel respected, supported, and empowered to thrive.
